Cultural Notes
To make this more interesting travel for members who participate, we give some information which may help to better understand the environment we're going to discover.

The complex range of Castell'Azzara facing east on the great valley of the Paglia and is the most important mountain range that meets in the south of Mount Amiata, and the first plateau tuff Sorano, Sovana and Pitigliano from which it is well known for the harshness of the forms and the height of the mountains.

The peaks that make it are:

- Mount Civitella mt.1107 above sea level, which takes its name from the top of the mountain closest to the center ( Civitas = City);

- Monte Penna mt.1086 probably named for the optical effect that makes it look like the highest being detached from the other peaks seen from a distance and makes him look like a dart thrown in the sky;

- Mount Nebbiaio mt.1086 being exposed to the southwest on certain days and to cover the first and last fog to clear.

The natural environment has always been the main wealth of the territory, now recognized reserve of Monte Penna, an area protected by regional laws and Community which occupies much of the surface of the Municipality.

In the area of \u200b\u200bCastell'Azzara there are traces of human habitation since Prestor. The metal deposits were exploited as early as the Neolithic period, as demonstrated by tools found in the mines of Siele of Cornacchino, and those found in the caves of the mountain.

Legend has it that the name derives from the fact that Castell'Azzara Castle has been played at dice or "Zara" (game time).

From the thirteenth century was owned by Conti Aldobrandeschi, then long contended with the Basques and the town of Orvieto.

from 1439 followed the fate of the County of Santa Fiora Sforza family until 1633, when the county was ceded to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
